Rough-skinned newts (Taricha granulosa) are Pacific Northwest salamanders that wander about fearlessly during the day, with no predators except the occasional garter snake. These, when cohabiting with the newts, develop an immunity to their deadly poison. Our household has a pet newt, and he inspires me to write about the natural world.
